  • Indian Rhino born in Terra Natura Benidorm

Baby Indian Rhino born in Terra Natura Benidorm.  The first Indian Rhino bred in captivity in Spain.

The animal and nature park, Terra Natura Benidorm is celebrating the birth of an Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), making it the first zoo in Spain to successfully breed this species in captivity.

The proud mum “Shiwa” went into labour on Tuesday (7th February 2012) but it was not until yesterday (10/02/2012) after a 16 hour labour that the baby rhino was born, weighing a hefty 50 kilos.

    rhino
Like all new mums Shiwa has not taken her eyes off her newborn . As soon as the calf was born Shiwa tried to stimulate it to make it stand up, by gently biting it's feet .

The survival of the calf depends on it being able to stand up and suckle as soon as possible.

A rhinoceros calf normally takes about a half an hour to stand up but in this case it took two hours.

So far the calf has not managed to suckle on its own so the keepers have been feeding it manually . The next 48 hours will be crucial for it's survival.

This calf was conceived despite the advanced age of the father, “Niko” who at 26 , is quite old considering males reach sexual maturity at around nine years old and the life span of the Indian Rhinois between 30 and 40 years. Females on the other hand reach sexual maturity at 5 years of age.

  • An interview with David Climent Manager of the Benidorm Circus

David Climent is the new manager of the Benidorm Circus, after taking over the reins from his father, Vicente, who aimed  to change our attitude towards the circus and make it more attractive to the public.   The young impresario is also the Ring Masterin the show, which every Sunday surprises and delights the public, many of whom repeat their visit to enjoy this innovative circus.

The project which is part of the Benidorm Palace has been open for some time and they plan to expand and perform outside the Valencian Community.  Prices are affordable at 16€ for adults and 8€ for children, and a fun filled afternoon for all the family guaranteed.

David what gave you the idea to create a permanent circus in Benidorm?

Well it all started about three years ago, my father Vicente Climent and Tony Tonito, a well known international clown, were toying with the idea to create a show which would serve as a trampoline to launch other shows.

How did you start working in the Circus?

I ´m  bi lingual, so I have played the role of Ring Master in the circus from the beginning but I also helped out managing and preparing the show.  My responsibilities gradually increased and today apart from the Ring Master duties I also perform on a small trampoline and am in charge of the show, rehearsals, publicity, and now my father has officially handed over the keys to me  -  it’s  my job to close the circus!

How many people are there performing in the Circus?

At the moment there are more than 50 counting the musicians, dancers, jugglers etc...davidcliment

There are seven different nationalities, Spanish, French, English, Italian, Russian, Ukraine and Polish.

Describe the installations and what the public will see when they visit the circus?

We have tried to change the perception that people have of the circus and probably the most important thing is that there are no animals.  We have based the idea on the Cirque de Soleil but obviously within our capabilities.  The circus over the years has got a bad reputation, we would like to change that so our Big Top is permanent,  it is acclimatized  with professional sound and lighting and has live music, something that only three other circuses have in the whole of  Spain..  You could say we are a red carpet circus - more elegant.

How does a circus gain the right to become permanent?

You need a permit from the Town Hall who sends an official to inspect the installations.  We were lucky in this aspect as the circus is situated in the grounds of the Benidorm Palace and that the project is part of the Palace.  This also means that many of the artists and musicians that perform in the Circus also perform in the palace.

How do you plan to manage the circus?

I would like to make the show dynamic and modern, then project it not only in Benidorm but in the whole region as there is no other show like it in the area.

Four months ago we joined the Asociacion de Circos de Autor, an association that looks for original creations and quality circuses and differentiates them from the others.

What qualities are needed to work in the “Circus World”?

The gift of Ad Lib or improvisation. is invaluable at certain times  in this type of show but passion and teamwork are also import especially when working with a large number of people.  We are like a big family and because of this have to work closely with each other to ensure that the show and performances go well.

What does this circus have that others don’t?

The show.  It is a mix between innovation and tradition.  We have tried to capture the essence of the Cirque de Soleil but not forgetting to include clowns who are very important to us.  The best way to describe it is FUN, we surprise the public.

What would you say to those who suggest that the circus is only for children?

Benidormis known for tourism which brings clients all year round.  The artists performing in the Circus are all professionals.  Tony Tonito for example won the National Circus Prize in 2005 and plays and important part in the show.  There are also ex Olympic athletes, gymnasts and trampolinists and the well know Artistic Director David Moore who has worked in some of the most prestigious night clubs in the world.  I recommend a visit to the Benidorm Circus, the mix of all these ingredients will leave you amazed and no one indifferent.

What projects do you have for the short and long term?

We would like to open a professional circus school to train and teach this profession.  We would also like to open a school for scenery and theatrical decoration and we are also discussing the possibility of holding an International Circus Festival like those held in Albacete or Palamos.

If the show continues to be successful over the next few years we would like to go further than the Valencian Community and show others what we are doing here.

  • Roman Village

    Roman Village discovered in Albir

In June 2008 archaeologists started to excavate the Roman ruins found on the beach in Albir.  With permission from the Town Hall in Alfaz del Pi, work recommenced twenty five years after they were first discovered.

The ruins date from the II- IV Century A.D. and cover approximately 1800m², which are divided into two areas, on one side rural dwellings and on the other side a cemetery or Necropolis.albir roman villa

The villas, or rural dwellings were in the middle of farming land. They were also used as a type of holiday home by the owner who lived in the city and used the houses occasionally to relax.  It is almost certain that the owner was an important person who lived in the Roman Town of Villajoyosa, which was known as Alonis under the Romans.

Between 1983 and 1984 archaeologists discovered the roman baths from the village, which were very well preserved.  The baths were extremely important in roman culture, apart from the obvious hygienic purpose they were great social meeting places.

The latest finds include the structure of the baths, the heating system, water channels, and rooms with hot caldarium , warm  tepidarium and cold water frigidarium as well as the pool. Other rooms provided moist steam or dry heat.

The Roman Baths are located behind the enclosure belonging to the Civil Guard on Albir beach and to the right of the gravel car park on the Boulevard de los Musicos.

The Cemetery which was excavated between 1980 and 1990 by Jose Guillermo Morote, held 400 Roman tombs.   Some of the dead were buried in Amphoras, others covered with flat clay tiles and others buried in graves.  One of the most interesting finds from 2009 was the discovery of the remains of a baby inside a type of vessel.  Some of these remains are on show in the Archaeology Museum in Alicante (MARQ).roman villa

Also discovered in the cemetery was a mausoleum belonging to the village measuring 11 x 5 metres.  It was constructed of a thick stone wall with six buttresses which suggest it originally had an arched roof.  This was divided into two areas. The mausoleum was destroyed in the middle of the IV Century A.D and most of the bodies were pillaged from the interior.  After its destruction, it was again used as a cemetery.

In 2002 it was restored to guarantee its conservation and today we can see it in perfect condition in Calle Ruperto Chapi, in the Coliseo residential complex.

There are plans to construct walkways, panels and a covering around the baths with a view to opening them to the public for spring 2011.

  • Interview with Mr Serge Gambi

Benidorm Promotion is a group of companies whose aim is to offer every service available in Benidorm to tourists the world over.

We have interviewed Mr Serge Gambi, President of Benidorm Promotion to find out a little bit more about this Federation.

Serge, an impresario, arrived in Benidorm in March 1974, fell in love with Benidorm and the surrounding area.  He decided to stay, develop his ideas for tourism and work with the companies dedicated to this sector.Mr Serge Gambi

What now appears easy to achieve was initially rather complicated.  It took years of meetings and workshops with the local companies, many of them from very different fields in tourism, to collect the various ideas and collate them to form the Federation.

The following is an excerpt of the interview with Serge in which he explains how Benidorm Promotion was conceived, what it is comprised of and the role that Benidorm Town Hall plays in it.

    Serge, what is Benidorm Promotion?

Benidorm Promotion is the result of an idea from various business managers, Associations and Presidents to promote Benidorm in and beyond our region.

Which associations are you referring to?

At the present time Benidorm has more than 1.560 different businesses that have formed various associations, for example; - the Association of Apartments, Association of Travel Agents, Association of Tradesmen, Association of Restaurants, and the Association of Young Impresarios.

We also have various theme parks and shows, for example, Aqualandia, Terra Mitica, Terra Natura, Benidorm Palace, Castle Conde de Alfazand many others.

The members have worked directly with the Town Hall to create this federation, and this will benefit the visitors to this region.

How did the idea to form a Federation of Association and Companies come about?

Benidorm is a unique place.  There is no other town like it.  It offers sun, fantastic beaches, fun and entertainment.  It is easy to get to Benidorm for all visitors, Nationals or Internationals, but the best way to promote our town is to ensure that visitors are pleased with their visit and would like to return.  When they return home and tell family and friends about their holiday they are proving how much they have enjoyed it here.  Others will then follow to find out what Benidorm has to offer them.  This is not enough; we also need to promote Benidorm and is this is where the Federation comes into play.

What relationship does the Town Hall have with the Federation?

We work very closely with the Town Hall.  Benidorm is not only a holiday destination.  We have all the facilities here to hold congresses, concerts and sports events, as we demonstrated this year with the Davis Cup.

Is it difficult to co-ordinate so may different businesses in the Federation?

Not really, the Federation is already established, our aims are clear, so it is actually very rewarding to see the results.  We have been working since May 2005 to achieve a common goal from all the different perspectives of our members.

    Why recommend Benidorm?

Benidorm is the tourist capital of the Valencian Community.  As I mentioned before we can offer the visitor everything they are looking for whether it is our fantastic beaches, with access and swimming for the disabled , theme parks, sports installations, golf courses or any of other activities we have, for example scuba diving.  We have discotheques’, dances, live music and live acts and plenty of good restaurants to suit all pockets.

Our members want the best for this region and Benidorm Promotion allows us to promote our town and to ensure that our visitors get the best we have to offer.

On that note, we take our leave from Mr Gambi, someone who is contributing to making Benidorm even better.

    Thank you Serge.
