  • Terra Natura accepts eleven birds of prey for rehabilitation.

Terra Natura the animal and Nature theme Park in Benidorm has received eleven birds of prey from a Recovery Center in Toledo.  These endangered species include the Golden Eagle, Bonelli´s eagle, hawk, vultures, Griffon Vultures, owls, kestrels and peregrine falcon.

The birds have all been injured in various accidents and these injuries prevent them from flying and from being able to fend for themselves in the wild.   These injuries have been caused by power lines, barbed wire, accidents involving cars and poisoning.

    ave rapaz
The birds have adapted well to their new home proof of which is the female Peregrine Falcon has just laid an egg.   Terra Natura staff are working with the birds to improve their fitness, mobility and quality of life with daily exercises and a careful diet to help them to gain weight.

Owls generally nest on the ground and sometimes people are under the impression that they have fallen from their nest and take them to SEPRONA (Nature Protection Service of the Guardia Civil), creating a further problem by removing the chick from its mother.   Recovery Centres look after the birds until they are ready to be freed back into the wild, although in some cases it is not possible.

The new arrivals have a chip to identify them and will remain in quarantine, isolated from the other birds until they are in better health and have adapted to their new environment.  They will also be treated for parasites and to improve their general health.

Terra Natura will also consider the possibility of attempting to breed these endangered species in captivity and then set them free into the wild.

Birds of prey are an important part of the ecosystem, controlling the numbers of rodents.

  • Terra Natura Benidorm receives two golden-headed lion tamarins from the Brazilian Government

The animal and nature park Terra Natura Benidorm proudly presented two golden-headed lion tamarins (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) given to them by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment & natural resources.  The complex has become one of only three zoos in Spain to have this small primate considered one of the most endangered mammals on the planet.

The keepers transferred both marmosets from the veterinary clinic in the park to their new installations which are located in the “American Continent” section of Terra Natura.  The management started proceedings to bring these primates to the park in 2006.  The petition was finally approved by the International Committee for the Conservation and Management of lion tamarinds (ICCM) in 2007 in the absence of approval from the Brazilian authorities.cabeza-leon

It has taken five years for the Brazilian Government to comply with this resolution.  Generally it is difficult for applications of this type to be approved due to the urgent need to conserve the species and because of their biological importance.   Terra Natura has had to prove that the park met all the conditions needed to breed and care for these special animals.

Captive breeding in zoos and the re -introduction of these monkeys into their natural habitat has helped to save the species from becoming extinct.

Currently there are between 6,000 and 15,000 of these primates in the world.  In the last 21 years the population is estimated to have fallen by more than 50%.  The expansion of crops, cocoa, palm oil, coconuts and grass production for livestock are the main reasons for this decline.  Only 2% - 5% of its natural habitat survives today.

The species is native to Brazil and is only found in the coastal region of Bahia, between the River Contas in the north and the River Pardo in the South.  It’s name comes from its long black and gold hair which resembles that of an African lion.  It usually weighs between 480 and 700 grams and varies in length from 23 – 37 centimeters.  Its tail can measure up to 40 centimeters in length.

    Beniexcursions.

  • An expert extracts snake venom in Terra Natura Benidorm

An expert in dealing with  dangerous animals, extracts venom from a snake in Terra Natura so it can be analysed by The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

An expert used to handling poisonous animals has extracted the venom from an African viper, (Bitis nasicornis), this morning in the nature park Terra Natura in Benidorm.veneno

The toxic liquid extracted during the process will be transported to the CSIC, where a scientific team will analyse the multifaceted protein chains that make up the extracted poison.

The close relationship between the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the nature park allows testing antidotes presently available to see if they could be used for other snake venom.

To extract or milk the venom, the snake’s head has to be immobilised.  Once this is done and the fangs are placed over a container the venom can be extracted.

Once the snake has “bitten” the glass the expert presses gently on the glands where the venom is produced to extract the largest quantity possible.  Carefully with a precision pipette, the toxic liquid is placed on a Petri’s dish and frozen so that it is in perfect condition when it reaches the laboratory.veneno2

This process is risky as direct contact is maintained with the snake.  With some species such as vipers of rattle snakes, the risk is greater as the fangs that inject the venom move making it easy for the handler’s fingers or hands to be bitten.  In Spain there are only two or three professionals skilled to carry out this type of extraction from poisonous snakes.

The process is carried out every two or three months so no undue stress is caused to the snakes.  The quantity of poison obtained from each extraction varies according to the species and size of the snake.  The Spanish National Research Council are currently interested in  Viper, Cobra, Rattlesnake, Gila Monster and Scorpion Lizard venom.

  • Leo Bassi attempts to get a Guinness World Record in Benidorm

    Like ducks to water.

The comedian Leo Bassi attempts a new Guinness World Record swimming in the sea with the largest duck shaped rubber ring in the world.

A childhood trauma.  That’s the explanation that comedian Leo Bassi gave in Benidorm to those who asked what on earth made him want to swim in the Mediterranean with a giant yellow duck shaped rubber ring.

The comedian, deadly serious explained while a small motor inflated the rubber ring, that when he was six years old his parents refused to buy him a duck shaped rubber ring that he had set his heart on, telling him that it was dangerous and once in the water it could not be controlled.20100716-leo_bassi

This frustrated childhood dream took him to the Poniente Beach in Benidorm last Saturday on the back of a duck measuring more than 40 metres in perimeter.

The diameter of the creature was 14 metres and 6 metres in height.  Weighing approx 250 kilograms it was dragged down to the waters edge by Bassi’s team and officials from Benidorm.

Three hours later the duck took shape, technical problems according to Bassi meant that the duck could not be inflated until 11:20.  This delay meant that his schedule was put back so it wasn’t until 14:40 that the comedian wearing a black suit that looked out of place among the spectators congregated in swimsuits, climbed aboard the duck via a ladder incorporated in the plastic animal.

The specific details, measurements of the duck, photographs etc. will be given to the Guinness Book of World Records to establish Basis’s world record and to see if anyone has attempted anything similar and if a record already exists.   We will have to wait six weeks to find out.

This is the first time that Leo Bassi has attempted to enter the record books although he states he has done “many things “in his life.  The beaches of Benidorm were chosen due to their popularity and calm waters.   The comedian also happened to be performing that same evening in the Amphitheatre Oscar Espla one of the cultural events organised during the summer months by the Town Hall.

But let’s get back to the yellow duck and a 60 year old man still dreaming of toys.

Bassi was forthcoming about his record attempt but held back key information about the colossal dimension of the float and where it was made.  All he would say was that it was “made in Spain “  He did not want to leave too many clues or to make things easy for another visionary who could follow and attempt to beat his world record.

There are three stages erected in the park, the largest being in the Bull ring which has been renamed as Budweiser, with a capacity to hold 10.000 people.  The other two stages the XTIand Jack Daniels have been erected in the auditorium Julio Iglesias and the Amphitheatre Oscar Espla both of which are also in the L’Aiguëra Park.  The three areas are all connected by the main path inside the park which runs from the north of the park to the South.

The first to arrive, attended the opening ceremony, which saw performances from Second, L.A and La Habitacion Roja along with the D.J Angél Idiota.

This was just a taste of what was to come and tested the 100.000 watts of light and the 47.000 watts of sound from the XTIstage.  Measuring 18 metres wide and 12 deep it will be the scenery for one of the main attraction of this years Low Cost Festival, the mythical band Los Planetas.

Apart from the three stage areas there were three bars provided, hundreds of toilets, three rest areas and three areas serving food with six picnic areas, not to mention the VIP area.  Entrance to the festival was via two entrances one in between the Jack Daniel and XTI stages and the other by the Budweiser scenery.

Another of the attractions of the Festival was the Record Fair, located in the Square “Sus Majestades los Reyes de España”, by the Town hall, which also had live music supplied by La Furgo.  During the two days of the Festival, band members signed cds in the marquee in the square and people could purchase cds of all the bands performing.

Hundreds of security guards assured the safety inside the park from 18:00 hours when the doors opened until approx. 05:00 hours in the morning, when those attending left for the various bars and discotheques in the area.

  • Discovering the Roman Villa of Albir

When Constantine I and later Theodosius where leading a still splendid Rome, Albir, the coastal resort of Alfaz del Pi, was just farm land.

Albir was then dependant on the city of Allon, which is now Villajoyosa.  It was a rural area presided over by a large Roman Villa, the same one that was discovered on a plot of land approximate 20 years ago a few hundred metres from the beach.

Next to this villa in other parts of the surrounding countryside were small cottages that cannot match the splendour of this villa, a splendour that is obvious from its private baths.sepultura_bebe_anfora_romana_hallada_l_alfas_pi

The villa, now a project of the Town Hall, is to be financed by state funds from the “Plan E” and it aims to preserve, protect and exploit the baths.

The plan is to cover the baths and install walk ways, some made of wood and others transparent that allow the area to be seen without risk to the site which is one of the most important archaeology discoveries in the province of Alicante.

According to the archaeologist Carolina Frias only the roman baths have been fully uncovered and a small section of the residential room that was used by the villa’s owners.

There is still a vast area to be excavated and it is hoped they will uncover the oil press where they produced their olive oil and also the area where they made their own wine.  Even though these part of the villa are still hidden the archaeologists are aware of their existence due to the fact that they have found artefacts used in the production of oil and wine which according to Frias are very similar to what we use today.

This work should take place from October or November when the new EMCORP project from the Valencian Government will be put into practise.  This will be the third project of its kind related to this villa and will pay for the excavations.  By then the site should be covered and the walkways provided over the baths.  Once the site is covered the excavations can continue and guided tours will commence.roman villa

Visitors to this site will have the added attraction that the excavations are in full swing, therefore those who visit will be able to see the archaeologists at work.

They will also be able to learn how the private baths we used.  The baths consisted of three different areas, one with cold water, the second with warm and the last with hot water.  The last area not only had hot water but also a heating system that heated the room as well as the water.  The heating system was based on a firewood oven that heated a chamber.  Later on in the 300 years that the villa was in use other pools were added along with a water tank that supplied the baths.

Last November, very close to these baths, the villa revealed one of its best kept secrets, a funeral amphora, which contained the remains of a baby or a young child.  The future excavations could reveal much more facts that have been hidden underground for centuries.

  • The Alfas Film Festival

Alfas del Pi has been closely connected to the Spanish film industry for the last 22 years.

Last Friday, the 2010 edition of the Alfas Film Festival commenced.   An important event which honours famous films stars every year.   The stars to be honoured this year are the Argentinean actress Soledad Villamil and the Spanish actor Emilio Gutierrez Caba. Both have been awarded the highest award of the festival the “Faro de Plata”or Silver Lighthouse.  This award has in previous years been awarded to the directors Pedro Almodovar and Alejandro Amenabar or to the actors Paco Rabal, Carmen Maura, Marisa Paredes, Eduardo Noriega and Geraldine Chaplin. All of these and hundreds more over the last twenty years have walked the red carpet and made this one of the most important film festivals in Spain.

The film that has won this year’s edition of the festival is “Pablo” directed by Nely Reguera.

The Festival starts with the inaugural gala which is traditionally held in the Casa de Cultura.  Along the esplanade, admired by approximated 2000 spectators walked many well known faces from film and television, directors, producers as well as the two stars honoured with this years “Silver Lighthouse”.  On the red carpet we saw, Neus Asensi, Carmen Conesa, Jordi Rebellon, Ana Rujas, Antonio Valero, Elisa Lledo, Angel Pardo and Bibiana Fernandez among others.  Bibiana presented the gala for the second year running and added glamour to the event by arriving in a horse drawn carriage.soledad_villamil

Soledad Villamil was the first to receive the award, this was the first Spanish award that the actress has received for her role in “El secreto de sus ojos” ( The secret in their eyes) which converted her into a star outside her native Argentina.

Thanks to her role in this film she was nominated for a Goya for the Most Promising New Comer .   Unfortunately she was unable to collect the Goya personally or to attend the Oscar Ceremony where “The Secret in their eyes.” won Best Foreign Language Film, due to  other film commitments.

The actress was presented with the Silver Lighthouse by two of the producers of “The Secret in their eyes”, Spaniard Gerardo Herrero, and Paraguayan Mariela Besuievski.   The actress was thrilled to receive the award which she believes bridges the gap between one side of the Atlantic and the other.

Emilio Guetierrz Cabo also received his award from friends, in his case from the Theatre Director Mario Gas and from the Valencian actor Jorge de Juan, with whom he has worked on many occasions.  The Festival of Alfas has wanted to honour Emilio for many years as he is considered to be one of the greats of Spanish theatre and film.emilio_gutierrez_caba

The final touch to the evening was a musical performance of Milongas, Tangos, Coplas and other Argentinian rhythms all sung by Soledad Villamil herself, who is also a singer with two recorded albums to her credit.

With the Festival officially open approximately 100 films will be screened.  The most important films that have premiered during the year , nationally and internationally with a special reference to the Hollywood films.  The films are shown in different locations, one of them being the beach in Albir, which allows the festival to reach everyone as the Festival Director Juan Luis Iborra pointed out.  Differing from the screenings held  in the Casa de Cultura or in the Cinema Roma, the beach screenings are in the open air and attended by hundreds of people every night.

Apart from the screenings and the competition for the Best Short Film , this edition of the Alfas film festival has added a new section.  A debate or discussion between some of the stars and directors of the most popular Spanish films of the year.  Among them Daniel Monzon, whose camera captured the winner of the previous year Cell 211.  He was accompanied by Alberto Ammann, winner of the Goyafor Most Promising New Comerand by Villamil and Herrero who starred together in The secret of their eyes along with Miguel Angel Tobias director of the Documentary  “ Sueños de Haiti” (Dreams of Haiti).

Another film discussed was “Me Too” starring Lola Sueias and Pablo Pineda , the young Down Syndrome actor who shone in his role.  Accompanying Pineda were the directors Alvaro Pastor and Antonio Naharro.

    Short Films

These are the main feature of the festival.  Audio- visual stories less than 20 minutes in duration.  This year 128 short films have been entered and the judges will then select those they think have the best visual quality with the best script.  The 16 selected films La historia de siempre, Lost, Gracias, El opositor, Adios muñeca, 9 , Burbuja, El orden de las cosas, La autoridad, Killer, La Rubia de Pinos Puente, Mi amigo invisible, Pablo, Ona, Recuedos a Wy-Fly & Ultimo minuto,  have been selected by the jury for the Best Short Film in this edition of the festival.

The 16 films can be seen during the festival, they are screened over the period and before the full length films shown during the festival. The majority of these short films are dramas that enter into the depth of human nature but there are also some comedies, from Madrid, Cataluña, the Basque Country or Andalucia.

The Valencian Community has entered two short films into the competition this year, in previous years they have entered various projects from local directors , filmed in the Valencian region which help to promote awareness  of the Valencian Film Industry.

  • New Guinness World Record in Aqua Natura Benidorm

DAVID CALVO SETS A NEW WORLD RECORD SOLVING TWO RUBIC CUBES IN THE AQUARIUM AT AQUA NATURA BENIDORM.

The young man completed both puzzle cubes in 1 minute 16 seconds while submerged with six sharks.

David Calvo from Bilbao set a new World record this morning 2nd July 2010 when he solved two rubic cubes in less than 1, 24 minutes while submerged in the aquarium at Aqua Natura Benidorm.  David is the President and founder of the Spanish Rubic Club and demonstrated the art of a speed cuber by  solving the cubes surrounded by sharks some of them as large as 2 metres long.  He completed both cubes in 1,16 minutes.cuborubik

The 24 year old beat the record previously created in April of this year on Italian televison where the record holder resolved two cubes one after the other while under water, in doing so, David earned his 4th Guinness world record.

After donning his neopreno diving suit David  was submerged in the aquarium at Aqua Natura Benidorm, which holds 1,5 million litres of sea water and contains many different species of fish.  For security reasons a trained diving instructor was with David during the record attempt.cuborubik3

David obtained his first Guiness World record in 2008  when he solved the highest number of rubic cubes in one hour, completing a total of 185.  His second record came a year later achieving the highest number of completed cubes while under water and his third title when he completed five cubes with just one hand in exactly 2,27 seconds.

David was Spanish Rubic Cube Champion in 2006 and 2007 and his personal record is to complete a cube in 12,35 seconds.  There are 19 different speciality ways to solve a rubic cube  for example using both hands, one hand, completing the cube with your eyes closed and with cubes of different sizes.

  • Entrevista a Joanna Climent Yarwood
