  • Terra Natura introduce Kali to the pride

Experts from the Nature Park Terra Natura in Benidorm attempt to integrate Kali into the pride with the adult tigers

Experts from Terra Natura in Benidorm  have begun to integrate Kali,  the young Asian tigress born at the park in November 2012 with members of the pride. The young cub was rejected by her mother Ela at birth and was reared by staff at the nature park.
    kali2

Staff have begun by creating visual contact between Kali and Bombay, one of the oldest tigers of the pride. This way, both become familiar with the other and can smell and see each other without actually being in the same enclosure. It is hoped that Bombay will help Kali to be accepted and to integrate with the others in the pride, thus reducing the possibility of her being attacked by another lion who would class her as an intruder on their territory.

Once Bombay has accepted Kali, she will then be introduced to the other members of the pride individually.  Kali has been let out into the tigers enclosure on her own, to roam and explore the area thus leaving her scent in the process and becoming familiar with the scent of the others who will be her companions.

The Asian tiger (Panthera tigris) is an endangered species and is protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).kali

The Asian Tiger  can weigh up to 250 kilos and because of  their short fur, can adapt to the heat and humidity of the Asian Jungles.

This is the second largest predator that exists on the planet after the polar and the grizzly bear.

  • Terra Natura breeds a Peregrine Falcon in capativity

Terra Natura in Benidorm successfully breeds the Peregrine Falcon in Captivity.

Terra Natura, the animal nature park in Benidorm has managed to breed the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), in captivity. The Peregrine Falcon is a protected species and is very vulnerable so it was a special occasion and a first for Terra Natura.   Five Peregrine Falcon chicks were born at the parkalong with three owl chicks.

halcon peregrinoAs soon as the park became aware that the female falcon had laid a batch of eggs, the were removed from the nest and placed in an incubator at a constant temperature of 37,3 to 37,4 degrees to ensure the chicks had a good chance of survival.

After 30 days the eggs finally hatched and the offspring were reunited with their parents so they can start to feed them. The young chicks are kept in an enclosure with a temperature of between 34 & 35 degrees where they will remain for five or six days. They will feed three of four times a day and their parents will give them the warmth and protection they need during the first few days of their life.

Terra Natura Benidormhouses 32 birds of prey from 10 different species as well as two storks and other tropical birds. The birds of prey include Tawny eagles, Harris' Hawk, Bengal Eagle Owls, Owls, Great Horned Owls, African Owls, Kestrels and Kites.

The Peregrine Falcon was one of the favourite birds of the ancient Egyptians. It has amazing skills which it uses when flying and hunting. It is the fastest bird in the world and can reach a speed of 340 kilometres per hour when it swoops to catch its prey.halconperegrino

Its hunting technique is elaborate and it often traps its prey with a combined attack by both male and female bird. The destruction of their nests and poisoning due to the use of pesticides has dramatically reduced the number of the hawk in their natural habitat. They generally nest on rocky areas or in abandoned nests of other species and unlike other animals the male is smaller than the female.

  • Terra Natura Benidorm presents Pocahontas the Musical

Terra Natura recreates the story of Pocahontas in a spectacular musical. The story tells of the remarkable relationship that the Powhatan tribe maintained with animals and nature.

The theme park Terra Natura in Benidorm presents a musical based on the real life story of Matoaka traditionally known as Pocahontas.  The musical relates the adventures of this historical person and the Powhatan Tribe that survived hunting, fishing and cultivating the land.  The actors will try to portray the strong relationship that this tribe had with animals and nature.pocahontas

The musical is directed towards children trying to instil the values of respect and care towards other living beings and our environment.  Children participate directly in the play and learn songs from the story.  The actors interact with the public throughout the performance making them part of the show.

The stage is set with two tepees and the musical is performed twice a day during the week, once in the morning and once in the afternoon in the Amphitheatre in the Asia area until the 11th of September 2011.   Each performance lasts approximately 30 minutes and includes various animals such as raccoons and eagles.

The musical has been created by Luis Mendes especially for Terra Nature. The composer has written many songs throughout his career, some for famous Spanish singers such as Tamara and Rosa.

This musical is one of the many new additions to the park for the spring and summer seasons.  Also included is a Wild West Horse show, which shows how riding has evolved over the centuries.  There is also a puppet show for the younger visitors and street artists “Pangehistoricos” as well as the Sea Lions show.

  • An interview with Manuel Cabezuelos Councilor for Tourism in Benidorm.

    The challenges of tourism management.

Manuel Cabezuelos is Councilor for the Department of Tourism, a position he has held for the last 18 months, during which time his policy has been to diversify tourism in Benidorm and to revive forgotten markets.

During this period he has developed new ways to promote the city, which have been agreed with representatives in the tourist sector and special events have been planned which should revive some of the markets that have been neglected over the years.  The Tourism Department run by Cabezuelos has worked closely with the Benidorm Tourism Foundation (Fundacion Turisme Benidorm) and with various tourist organizations’ in the area to maintain optimum levels of occupancy during these difficult times.

How healthy is tourism in Benidorm at the moment and what are your expectations for the upcoming summer season?

Progress has been positive and so are the prospects for the summer season.  According to the latest statistics from the Easter period, British and Spanish tourist figures have been favorable.   It is true that people are spending less money, but the occupancy numbers are positive so I think we'll have a good summer.

People are not so afraid of the “crisis” now, they need to take a break and go on holiday.  Benidorm has absolutely everything, and at an affordable price which makes it an ideal and appealing destination.

So far the occupancy figures for 2011 have risen 7 points.  How has the Town Hall’s efforts influenced these statistics?

We are organizing different events throughout the year to increase visitors to the area.  These events range from sporting events, congresses’ or music festivals and are organized at key times to promote occupation.

You have stated that the aim of your government has been to recuperate lost markets.  What markets are you referring to and how are you trying and get them back?cabezuelos

We have been trying to increase our attraction to the younger sector of the market which we have lost over the years.  Musical events such as Low Cost and Electrobeach festivals have been added to the calendar of music festivals held in Spain.  Benidorm´s image is changing and we are reminded of this when we attend the trade fairs.  The people who speak badly of Benidorm are those who have never been.  The different events we hold mean that people are discovering Benidorm again along with the many favorable aspects of the area.  The tourism that is generated from special events is very important, basically we hold a congress every week with approx. 600 to 1000 people in each and when we finish building the Cultural Centre, Benidorm will be a very special destination indeed.

Attracting Tourism from different countries is also one of your Objectives.

Yes.  We are interested in the Russian market and in some of the other Eastern European Countries.

We have also recently started direct flights from Alicante to Milan and with the new airport terminal in El Altet we have the opportunity to receive more flights and to offer a better service.

Out of all the activities that have been introduced during your time in office which are you most proud of?

Probably the gastronomical events.  We held our first “Pincho and Tapas” Competition recently.  It is important that people realize that we have very good restaurants and tapas bars in the area.  Benidorm is now recognized for its local cuisine outside the region.

If you are re-elected for another term what new events do you plan to introduce and which are you intending to continue with?

We will continue with all the music concerts, bull fighting in the Bull Ring, gastronimcal events and we intend to hold the 2nd edition of the “Benisub” Competition, the International underwater Photographic Competition which we started with the Benidorm Tourism Foundation.   We will have television crews filming here, there will be events in the Theme Parks and we are working with the foundation to start a programme of Health and Beauty Breaks.    We would like to introduce an Oktoberfest to the area in the month of October which is a German Beer Festival as well as a British Beer Festival.  We also plan to maintain the “multiadventures” activities that we held last year but on a larger scale and of course repeat the Low Cost and Electrobeach festival but this year we intend to change the location to a larger venue after last years success and we will add other smaller musical events such as Turborock.

These ideas form part of how you plan to offer more to the public but are there any ideas or projects that have not yet been exploited?

We would like to use some of our public areas more for example the Square by the Town Hall (Plaza de SSMM Los Reyes de España) was never used and now many events are held there.   We would like to use the Castle area more often too; it is ideal for holding presentations and certain events.  We would like the public to present their ideas to the Town Hall and to be able to develop them as they did with the wine tasting held during the Tapas and Pinchos competition.

We are also working on projects dedicated to the nightlife in Benidorm and to promote gay tourism.

Benidorm’ infrastructure is important if you are to expand in future markets, what do you think needs improving?

Everything.  It is extremely important that when clients step outside their four or five star hotels that they find a city of the same category, with high standards.  The Avenida Mediterraneo and the Avenida Europa for example need improving as do other streets.  We all have to work together, the Public sector and the private sector.

With regard to promoting  Benidorm and publicity,  you have made cuts to the traditional trade fairs to invest in other ways of promoting the area that are more effective. What are they?

The trade fairs are not what they used to be. There are now much easier ways to communicate with the public and it is easy to send and display videos and information using the new technologies’.  We have attended the Tourist Trade Fairs but reduced our costs by 80%.  Benidorm has three web pages and we are on the Social Networking sites.  We have also recently become part of the World Tourism Organisationwhich enables the rest of the world to learn about us.

On a personal note, how would you evaluate your 18 months at the helm of the Benidorm Tourism Department?

It has been an honour to be able to head this department as I have worked in tourism all my life and for that reason I have found it very rewarding and I feel proud to have been able to do so.  I hope I have done a good job and if I have made any mistakes during my office that I can be forgiven for them.

  • A typical day in Terra Natura Theme Park Benidorm

In previous articles we have written about the work of the vets and staff at Terra Natura Park in Benidorm. On this occasion we will talk about some of the daily activities in the park which will leave no animal lover indifferent.

When we interviewed Enrique Sanchez, the gentleman responsible for the care and training of all the animals at the park, (see interview), we asked him about a typical day and about the responsibilities the staff members.titipigmeocrias2

He told us that recently one of the Camels was found to have a lump which had to be surgically removed. The park has its own veterinary service and a large operating theatre to treat the different animals residing in the park.  During these operations it is usual for the animals’ keeper to be present, showing how passionate they are about their work, many of them even attending surgeries during their holidays.

The park also boasts a large kitchen area where three staff members work tirelessly preparing food for the animals.  There are four or five large refrigerated areas where the raw food is stored i.e. poultry, fruit, and alfalfa.  These products are used in the preparation of the menus and various diets, all supervised by the Vet., ensuring optimal care for the animals.

Enrique Sanchez pointed out the similarity between many of the species and humans.  To illustrate his point he explains that the Pachyderms (mammals which include elephants, Rhinoceroses, Hippopotami, Wild Boars, Pigs, Warthogs, Tapirs Aardvarks and  Hogs)  become very nervous when their routine is disrupted and that they calm down when they listen to Classical music.

The animals daily routines are also curious, tigers for example go outside in the morning but will only eat meals indoors.

Elephants normally cover about 60 km a day walking in the wild, so in captivity their nails grow extremely rapidly.  The keepers have to give them a manicure every 15 days.  To do this the animals are placed behind a window, the animal’s foot is pulled through and the manicure completed.  This method creates a peaceful environment for the animal and a safe one for the staff member.  The elephants are extremely intelligent and are very aware of everything happening around them, especially when they are being taken care of.  They allow the keepers and vets to examine them, take blood samples etc., which in the case of the elephants are taken from their ears.  It is not as easy to take samples from other species in the park.

Terra Natura works tirelessly and is constantly innovating.  Just recently they have introduced a virtual reality system that enables you to interact with the animals in 3D, the first park to introduce such technology. You can access this from their website (www.terranatura.com), downloading the program called Kali, after the baby tiger cub that was born in the park.   Observe the growth of your virtual animal and experience many adventures while you form a virtual zoo from your own home.

Take a look at our photos of Terra Natura Theme Park.
