Tigers, gibbons and gorillas discovered the gifts and their delicious contents before the park opened.gorilla

The novelty breaks the daily routine and helps to stimulate the animals both physically and psychologically.  The parcels will be given throughout the Christmas period to all the animals at the Benidorm park.

  • Terra Natura Benidorm has the largest venomous snake in Europe

A FOUR METER LONG COBRA WHICH COULD KILL AN ELEPHANT IN LESS THAN 15 MINUTES

The animal and nature park, Terra Natura Benidorm now has the largest venomous snake in Europe in its park, a cobra that measures over four meters long.

The King Cobra named “Frank” arrived at the Benidorm theme park with his female companion, who is also rather large, and measures 3, 80 meters in length.

With a reptile this dangerous, safety measures in the park have been increased and extreme care was taken during the transfer of the snakes to their new home.

The Cobra venom is extremely potent and due to the size of this specimen and the amount of venom it is capable of injecting into its victim, its bite would kill an elephant or a human being in less than 15 minutes.

The Cobra venom is a neurotoxin that attacks the nervous system with devastating results.  It also contains an enzyme, called lecithinase, which rapidly destroys the cell wall causing serious tissue damage.

The fangs, vertical and stationary are located at the front of the upper jaw and Frank’s fangs measure nearly 11 millimetres in length.  The new security measures have been designed to prevent the snakes from escaping and any other type of incident.webcobra
Keepers will have no direct contact with the cobras while caring for them. Special chambers have been installed with doors that will close to isolate and control each reptile while they are receiving food or medication, without any “handling” being necessary.

Frank’s previous keeper died in a British zoo after being bitten during handling, so direct contact with both snakes is strictly prohibited.

The new facility in Terra Natura is equipped with safety glass and heating systems to maintain a constant temperature of 28 degrees.

It is divided into four areas, two areas to keep the male and female apart and the other two as a back up holding areas which will have a constant temperature of 30 degrees.

Each cobra has free access to the facility and its holding area so it can move between them to regulate its body temperature.

Reptiles, cannot manufacture their own body heat, they have to rely on ambient temperature to raise or lower their internal core temperature. Proper thermoregulation is essential for health and for specific processes such as digestion and immune function.

The cobra feeds on other snakes in the wild which makes their diet very difficult to maintain in captivity so they will be gradually accustomed to eat rodents.

Small pieces of rat meat will be hidden amongst the debris left behind when the snakes shed their skins.  This way they will become accustomed to the smell and eventually eat the rodents on their own.

The pair are being kept under observation to monitor their behaviour and health after a series of scans and blood tests were carried out while they were under sedation. An identification chip was also placed in each one.

The aggressiveness of the king cobra is such that females store sperm for several years to fertilize themselves so they do not have to mate again.  The male cobra can sometimes devour the females after mating.

Even the hatchlings secrete pheromones to neutralize the mother’s appetite and tend to leave the nest soon after birth to avoid being eaten.

    THE AQUALANDIA MUNDOMAR FOUNDATION CAMPAIGN

    "1 KG = 1 SMILE"

The Aqualandia-Mundomar Foundation in collaboration with the Welfare Department from Benidorm Town Hall launched a charity campaign this morning aptly named "1kg = 1 smile."

The initiative aims to collect food for disadvantaged families in the area for Christmas 2011.1kg1sonrisa

A press conference was held in Mundomar with Cristina Escoda, the Welfare Councilor for the City of Alicante and a spokesman from the Benidorm park. The aim is to collect as much food as possible to help families who are going through a difficult period.

The campaign starts on Saturday 17th of December and will run all weekend. Anyone who would like to make a donation may do so at the entrance to Mundomar, where an area will be available to deposit your donations.Once the campaign is completed, all the food will be stored in the park until the Red Crossand Caritasstaff come to pick it up. • Terra Natura Benidorm confirms the pregnancy of one of its Indian Rhinos.

If the pregnancy goes to full term Terra Natura will be the first zoo in Spain to successfully reproduce the species in captivity.

    shiva

After the mating season ended,  tests were carried out in an Austrian laboratory on the female Rhino’s faeces that confirmed her pregnancy. These samples were taken twice a week and sent to the specialized laboratory in Vienna. The test looks for increased hormone levels which only occur naturally when the female is pregnant.

The news has delighted the keepers at the Benidorm Natura park, Terra Natura, who have closely cared for Niko a 24 year old male and Shiwa an eight year old female for over a year.  The due delivery date will be some time between January and March.shiva2

If Shiwa completes the 17 months gestation period Terra Natura will be the first and only zoo in Spain to breed this species in captivity.
The Indian rhino is an endangered species and it is currently estimated that there are only about 2,500 in the wild in India and Nepal.

The advanced age of Niko did not seem to affect his ability with this young female.  In males, sexual maturity is usually around the age of nine while in female it is from the age of five.  The species has a life expectancy of between 30 and 40 years although fertility declines from the age of thirty in females.

  • The Winter season arrives in Mundomar

The prairie dogs residing in Mundomar Benidorm go into hibernation.   With the drop in temperatures the animals take refuge in their burrows to shelter from the cold and rain.
    perrito de la pradera1

Visitors to Mundomar will have to wait for the spring and the warmer temperatures to return to be able to see the (genus Cynomys) or prairie dogs.

Theseburrowing rodents are native to North America and live in semi –arid areas in meadows where they perform authentic underground works of engineering.  The dogs, (so called because they emit sounds similar to a barking dog), dig long tunnels to connect the different burrows they use for shelter during the winter months.  They are very social animals that live in large groups under a strict social hierarchy.

These animals are four legged but it is common to see them in an upright position which they adopt to watch the other member of their colony when alerted to any threat or danger.

The prairie dogs residing in Mundomar have taken refuge in their burrows to await the return of the warm weather.  Only then will these cheerful rodents scamper out into the sun under the watchful eye of the Mundomar visitors.   If we are lucky we may see a few new members among their ranks in the spring!

  • Great expectations in Terra Natura Benidorm

A possible pregnancy at Terra Natura Benidorm

The age difference didn’t matter to the two Indian Rhinoceros in Terra Natura Benidorm. Shiwa a female rhino aged 8 and Niko aged 24 appear to have mated successfully and staff believes that Shiwa may be pregnant which would be great news as this particular species is in danger of extinction.

To be able to confirm this possible pregnancy, stool samples are collected twice a week which are frozen and then tested in a laboratory in Vienna, Austria.

The Austrian Laboratory test for an increase in hormone levels which takes approximately two weeks before the pregnancy can be confirmed.

If Shiwa is expecting, Terra Natura Benidorm will be the first zoo in Spain to form part of the small group to have achieved the reproduction of this species in captivity.

The species of Indian Rhino is in serious danger of extinction, there are approximately only 2,500 left in India and Nepal.

Niko’s advanced age didn’t seem to affect his interest for Shiwa.  Males achieve sexual maturity from 9 years of age while females reach sexual maturity at 5 years.  The species has a life expectancy of between 30 to 40 years but female fertility is considerably reduced from the age of 30.

If Shiwa’s pregnancy is confirmed, it would be 16 months until she finally gives birth in the Benidorm Zoo.

Shiwa weighs in at a hefty 1.700 kilograms and measure 1.80 metres high although she is considerable smaller than her mate Niko who weighs 2.000 kilograms, measures 2 metres high and 4 metres long.

Curiously, despite their size these animals can reach speeds of up to 56 miles per hour over short distances, and perform with agility in the water while feeding on plants located on the banks of rivers, lakes and ponds. Their hide is divided into panels resembling a shell, which is crowned by the characteristic horn 10 to 60 inches on their nose.

  • THE BAIX WINDMILL

On the slopes of the Sierra Aitana Mountain, 15 kilometres fromVillajoyosa and 23 kilometres from Benidorm, is the small village of Sella.  With approximately 500 River at the Baix windmill Sellainhabitants it has maintained all of its rural aspects despite its proximity to the popular tourist destinations.

The closeness to the Sierra Aitana peaks, mean that the climate is not as warm as the coast so it has not experienced the growth that has been seen in other areas exploited by tourism.  Indirectly, this has been favourable to the traditional character of the mountains towns like Sella.

The Rivers Sella and Arc surround the village joining together in the south before they meet the Amadorio and flow out to sea in Villajoyosa.

The Baix windmill is one of the many windmills marking the area.  There are five of them in total in SellaThe windmill was operational right up until 1968, when it profits were practically non existent and the machines finally ceased operating.

The windmill was a hydraulic mill, also known in the area as a Maquila.  A Maquila was a measure or portion of the flour, grain or oil, used as payment to the mill owner for his work.  The structure is still intact, as is the machinery and visitors can see the process in which the cereal is transformed into flour.shelter at the Baix windmill Sella

The windmill, used today as a rural hotel, retains its centuries old charm, surrounded by poplar trees and running water.  These elements along with the wind, which blows in from the Aitana, give the windmill and the surrounding area an unmistakable character.

Approximately 3 kilometres from the windmill and the village, in an area of olive, pine and carob trees, is the source of the river Arc.  Here the mountain has some magnificent vertical slopes.  They are not difficult to reach, great for climbing, and attract mountaineers from all over Europe. Then the surrounding area and the shelter, (constructed in an era before the existence of ropes, carabineers and mountaineering pins) are transformed into another world.
