A new beginning in Valencia for six rescued marine mammals

A dramatic transatlantic rescue operation has brought two beluga whales and four dolphins safely from Canada to their new home at Valencia's Oceanogràfic.

The six animals — female belugas Cleopatra and Jelly Bean, and dolphins Tsunami, Lida, Echo and Marina — were transferred from Marineland in Ontario following months of uncertainty over their future.

The recent solar eclipse produced some fascinating reactions among the animals at Terra Natura Benidorm, with keepers recording unusual vocalisations and subtle changes in behaviour during the most intense phase of the astronomical event.

Asian elephants, flamingos and barasingha deer were among the species observed displaying increased vocal activity. The behaviour of the flamingos and barasinghas particularly surprised the experts, as they began vocalising at a time of day when this is not normally observed.

The congress is organized by the Crocodile Specialist Group of the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This year's edition marks a significant milestone as it is the first time the event has been hosted in North Africa, with Crocoparc serving as the local host organization.

Under the theme "Crocodilians in an Anthropized World: Conservation, Challenges and Solutions," the congress explores the impact of human activity on crocodilian habitats and examines innovative strategies to ensure the long-term survival of these remarkable reptiles.

Over four days, nearly one hundred presentations are being delivered, covering topics such as species conservation status, reintroduction projects, veterinary medicine, toxicology, taxonomy, captive management, and the complex relationship between humans and crocodilians.
