Global Experts Unite for Crocodile Conservation

The congress is organized by the Crocodile Specialist Group of the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This year's edition marks a significant milestone as it is the first time the event has been hosted in North Africa, with Crocoparc serving as the local host organization.

Under the theme "Crocodilians in an Anthropized World: Conservation, Challenges and Solutions," the congress explores the impact of human activity on crocodilian habitats and examines innovative strategies to ensure the long-term survival of these remarkable reptiles.

Over four days, nearly one hundred presentations are being delivered, covering topics such as species conservation status, reintroduction projects, veterinary medicine, toxicology, taxonomy, captive management, and the complex relationship between humans and crocodilians.

Terra Natura Benidorm's Contribution

Representing Terra Natura Benidorm at the congress is park veterinarian Mario Torró, who is participating in discussions with international experts and sharing insights into the park's conservation efforts.

The Crocodile Specialist Group is a global network comprising biologists, wildlife managers, conservation organizations, and researchers dedicated to the study and protection of the world's 26 recognized species of crocodiles, alligators, caimans, and gharials.

For Terra Natura Benidorm, attendance at the congress is closely linked to its work with the Siamese crocodile, a species that now survives only in small, fragmented populations in parts of Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand.

The park plays an active role in international conservation initiatives through its involvement in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) for the Siamese crocodile. Terra Natura Benidorm's Head of Conservation, Elisa Gozalbes, is a member of the EEP committee responsible for coordinating breeding and conservation efforts across European institutions.

Terra Natura Benidorm Supporting International Breeding Programs

Terra natura benidorm congressThe congress follows a recent veterinary and genetic study carried out at Terra Natura Benidorm on a breeding pair of Siamese crocodiles. The initiative formed part of wider international efforts to improve scientific understanding of the species and enhance coordinated conservation strategies.

During the operation, specialists conducted comprehensive health examinations and collected genetic samples to evaluate the animals' suitability for future breeding programs. These assessments are essential to maintaining healthy and genetically diverse populations under managed conservation programs.

By contributing valuable veterinary and genetic data, Terra Natura Benidorm is helping to strengthen international efforts aimed at safeguarding one of the world's rarest reptiles.
