  • Small fawn hand fed by keepers at Terra Natura Benidorm

Nala  is one of the Barasingha deer from Terra Natura, the animal and nature park in Benidorm.  She has just given birth to her first offspring but has not taken well to motherhood and has rejected the young fawn.

Staff at the Benidorm theme park became aware that something was wrong when they noticed her indifference to the young fawn´s needs as well as noting that she had not eaten the placenta which is normal for this species,  The mother doe normally eats the placenta to remove the scent of blood, so the young fawn will remain as invisible to predators as possible. The placenta is most likely a source of quality nourishment at well to help the doe who now has to produce rich deer milk.criabarasingha2small

Once staff were aware that there was a  problem, the fawn was taken to a separate area to be treated and fed away from the herd until she was old enough to be reintroduced to the herd.

The fawn, who has been named Elena after the Moto2 rider, Elena Rosell, is being bottle feed formula milk as well as receiving antibiotics and food supplements to build up her strength.

The first few days were not easy, Elena only weighed 6,5 kilos at birth which is small.  Added to this she developed a fever because the urachus (the urinary bladder which develops into a fetus) had not been reabsorbed after birth as is the norm.

Staff surgically removed the urachus and she is now doing well and has put on weight.  When she is strong enough she will be released back into the herd.

Terra Natura currently has 11 barasingha deer in the park, seven males and four females.

The species is named after the Hindi words barah & sig which mean twelve and horn respectively.  These animals are also known as swamp deer as they spend much of their time in the water in wetlands, where they are protected from attacks from predators.

They have an acute sense of smell which allows them to detect the presence of predators and danger at a great distance.

  • Terra Natura -Special home for disabled Toucan

The Benidorm theme park Terra Natura has just designed a special home to house a disabled Toucan.

Tuqui an eleven year old female Toucan was diagnosed with a strange condition shortly after her arrival at the park.  This rare skin lesion on her wings makes it difficult for feathers to grow therefore limiting her ability to fly.

During the first few months in the  Benidorm Park, Tuqui lived in the aviary with the other birds where they are able to fly around freely but she was unable to fly.  She could only jump from branch to branch, bravely defending herself from the attacks she received from the other birds, who recognized her disability and weakness.  She was also at risk of being injured if she fell from a great height.   tuquismall

Realizing that there was a problem Tuqui was seen by the park Vet, and she was diagnosed with a congenital deformity of her wings and an incurable skin condition that prevents feathers from growing to enable her to fly.

It is not possible for her to over come this disability so the vet and keepers devised  a clever strategy to improve Tuqui`s quality of life.

Tuqui was moved to a smaller area where she would feel safe and gradually regain her confidence again.  The area was enlarged at intervals as her confidence increased and an important bond grew between the Toucan and her keeper, very important for the bird to overcome the difficulties caused by its disability.

The keeper has worked with Tuqui now for over a year patiently gaining the birds trust, adapting everything to her needs, such as placing branches at ground level and helping her to develop other skills to over come the physical barriers.   Tuqui is now able to cross distances of 20 cm jumping from branch to branch.

Tuqui  lives in a specially adapted area with other parrots and animals with problems.  Branches artfully arranged to form a ladder, allow Tuqui to move nimbly around the facility and enjoy a lifestyle as close to life in the wild.

In this facility are a pair a couple of sociable golden-headed lion tamarins and two noisy aratingas, one of which is missing a leg.   Thanks to the dedication and treatment from the park staff these animals and birds are able to survive despite their disabilities.

Tuqui’s special relationship with her keeper is evident. She likes to be stroked and climbs all over her keeper showing her affection with confidence and gratitude.

Toucans are easily recognizable for their colorful plumage and for their beak.  They are very sociable birds that spend the majority of their lives in the trees feeding on fruit, insects and spiders.  They are in danger of extinction due to the destruction of their natural habitat, the tropical forests.

  • Get closer to the animals in Terra Natura Benidorm

Terra Natura Benidorm opens a new footpath to bring you closer to the elephants and buffalo in the park.

    newpathterranatura
The aim of this new path in Terra Natura Benidorm, is to permit the public to have a better view of the animals and closer contact with them.  The path crosses the 15,000 square meters of the elephant enclosure and the 5,000 square meter enclosure containing the water buffalo and camels.

The installation is complemented with a lookout tower from where you have a unique perspective of the Benidorm Nature Park and the animals without altering or modifying their natural behaviour with the presence of human beings.

You can also appreciate the vast expanse of the elephant enclosure which is regarded as the largest pachyderm facility in Europe.

The construction of this path permits the visitor to walk a few meters away from the spectacular male Asian elephant and the rest of the herd and admire the buffalo and camels that roam the prairie.nuevocaminotn2

The mighty male elephant Luka and two female elephants are frequently moved to different areas of the enclosure so the entire herd can enjoy his company.

These individuals share their habitat with a group of “Blackbuck” antelope as both species interact well and share the same natural ecosystem in the wild.

  • A new epoca for Tierra Mitica Benidorm

Georges Santa-Maria, arrived in the area in the mid 1980s.An entrepreneur, aiming to boost tourism in the area, his businesses have flourished and he now faces another challenge.   His latest venture is the theme parkTerra Mitica, which has rented for the next 10 years.  Georges is optimistic about this new venture and is not daunted by the task.  He has complete trust in those around him and believes that with courage and the strength of his team it will enable him to move forward and prosper.

It has been 25 years since you opened the most important water park in Europe.  What are your views of that period?

It has been very positive.  Since we opened Aqualandia, we have managed to achieve our estimated client numbers year on year, so we can’t complain.  Competition plays an important part differentiating one product from another and we have maintained our status in the area.

Will you be making any changes or adding anything to the park?entrevista a george santa maria 4

There are no planned changes.  What we do every year is make small improvements.  Last year, for example we added the Jacuzzi, which we have enlarged due to its popularity.  Next year we plan to improve the quality for our clients.

Has the difficult financial situation in Europe affected your businesses?

I could say that the financial crisis has not existed for Aqualandia and Mundomar.  Other businesses have been greatly affected.   We have benefited from the crisis in a manner of speaking; people still need to get away for a holiday, but somewhere not to far from home and without spending large amounts of money.  Benidorm has benefited from this too.  People have been unable to holiday outside Spain and have decided to take a short break here.

Are you saying that this precarious situation has turned into an opportunity?

Other countries have experienced the same phenomena.  In France, Disney or Futureoscope have both registered an increase in their number of visitors.  It is estimated that people spend about 3% on their breaks but the number of visitors has increased.  As I mentioned before people will still take a holiday even if they don’t go far afield.

When did you become interested in taking over the running of Terra Mitica?

Negotiations began about a year ago in June 2009.  We heard that there was a possibility that the Theme Park might be put up for sale, we contacted the owners and the negotiations started from there.

Terra Mitica has not made a profit since it opened 10 years ago.   Are you confident you can change this?

Yes although I admit it is easier to start a project from scratch than to take over one already established.

    What is your policy?

I have a lot of confidence in my staff and those closest to me and I often consult them when I am in doubt.  I consider them to be more qualified than myself in certain aspects and I have learnt an awful lot from them.  I never stop learning from them.  Life is a great school.

What are your intentions and your goals.

Since I decided to take over Terra Miticamy goal is to turn the park around and refloat it.  In the long and short term that means growth.  That in turn would mean an increase in the staff and illustrate the idea that I have for the park.

You are very optimistic, when do you hope to see the benefits

From the studies we have carried out, we hope to see some positive results in approximately one year.

    Letiticia Murillo.

  • An interview with Lucio Calzaverini owner of Viajes Alameda

Lucio Calzaverini, owner of Viajes Alameda S.A, has witnessed Benidorm´s evolution over the years.  After more than 40 years in Benidorm, he knows that very few European cities can compete with the capital of the Costa Blancaand he is well aware of how the city has adapted over the years to its changing circumstances.

In the 1980´s Benidorm received millions of French tourists, then in the 90´s it was the turn of the Italians to holiday in the city.  The Dutch have been part of Benidorm´s profile for many years but then all of that changed.  Today it is the British tourist that is the most important for the local industry so hotels and the different sectors of the local economy have had to adapt to this trend.luciocalzaverinireduced

For this business man, with great knowledge of the tourist industry and many years experience,Benidorm is great value for money in relation to the quality on offer, although he admits that when there is no demand, everything appears to be more expensive.

What in your opinion is the situation now during this crisis?

This crisis has coincided with a period of change in tourism.  Tourism is not the same now as it was ten years ago.  Internet is the primary reason for this change, it has revolutionised the tourist sector.  As all new technologies, it is a great tool, if you know how to use it correctly.  Of course, the Tour Operators are still bringing clients to the area but in smaller numbers.

What are the strategies that are being implemented to boost tourism in this area?

The most important is the creation of new markets, especially from Eastern Europe.  Countries like Bulgaria, Poland and Hungary are all potential areas to market.  Even though they have many problems their standard of living has improved greatly.

What is the economic situation in Benidorm at the moment?

Benidorm is probably one of the tourist areas that has suffered the least during this financial crisis.  When we look at the situation, there is still a lot of movement and a lot of clients.  Let’s not confuse productivity with the market; what is important is not the volume but the yield capacity.

Do you believe it is in decline?

Not in my opinion, no.  I have always believed that Benidorm is a very popular city that visitors never tire of, it has something special.

With your vast experience, what do you think Benidorm needs to complete its offer to the tourist?

It is obvious that improvements can be made in every area of life.  In all tourist areas there are problems of security, cleanliness and many other factors. Apart from that the city is perfectly adapted, it has everything.  The hotel industry the main drive of the local economy offers good standards and is very healthy.

Do you think that the Beach holiday, is becoming obsolete?

No.  If people are coming to Benidorm for a cultural holiday or to see historic buildings they are mistaken.  This is a city centred on entertainment, where visitors can enjoy themselves.  We have many restaurants, hotels and other areas for the visitor to enjoy.  One of the best examples is the large number of young people that see Benidorm as an entertainment paradise.

     What could be improved?

In my opinion I would not make any changes to what there is at the moment.  Benidorm is an area well known to those who visit.  Clients know exactly what the area has to offer and come here to enjoy themselves.
